Johanna Smiatek works especially in the field of interactive and kinetic art. Many works are “moving objects” (a term she has used since 2000) and sculptures. These works are complemented by many drawings. A further aspect of her artistic work are graphical wallpaintings, which often form a three-dimensional installation in space. In her work Johanna Smiatek refers to ordinary subjects, but changes these subjects in delicate dealing. Everyday objects are subtly transformed, their essence taken to absurd extremes. Objects originating in, or reminiscent of, the everyday world are cast in silicone and set in vibration by an electric motor specifically developed by the artist. The various objects, whether shoes, oversized lipsticks or mirrors, develop a subtly independent life. This staged trembling of the objects speaks about the human experience of self and of the body, but simultaneously calls it into question. Feelings of familiarity and strangeness are evoked, an ambivalence between exhilaration and insecurity. It is this, which gives the work its singular appeal. In her recent works the light, the digital control of light, the medium of video and sounds are essential parts, mostly in interaction with the beholder.
